Michelle Fromme

bio

Michelle Fromme was born and raised in Portland, Oregon and developed her practice in the context of various progressive studios and day programs such as Project Grow and Art From the Heart.  Her off-kilter figures appear as sympathetic tourists from an otherworld of soft, meandering borders.  In her scenes, circuitous mark making and patchwork sheets of watercolor are employed to illustrate six-limbed cats, mice bathing in oceans of Skittles and M&Ms, Muppet-like human figures, and kaleidoscopic weather.  In recent work, Michelle has begun augmenting her images with blocks of densely stacked, handwritten text.  These poetic collages are constructed of language taken from art and reference books, phrases from memory, and snippets of dialogue plucked from the rooms in which she works.  They playfully caption her imagery in ways befuddling and quite frequently moving.
